Area residents may have a merrier holiday season this year thanks to the special elves who donated food and gifts to Maywood Mission.  This year, about 760 children in Fairfield County will have more food on their tables and presents under the Christmas tree. Chartered in 1910, the mission has been helping people in Lancaster and other parts of Fairfield County by providing necessities for families, especially during the holidays.

One resident said that she appreciates being able to get what she needs even though sometimes asking for help is difficult.

“It is wonderful to know that there are people and organizations that are there for when there is a need,” said Tammy Becht, a resident of Fairfield County.

“For me, it is hard to ask for help. I am the one who is always offering help. I have known about Maywood Mission for many years. My church is right around the corner from them,” said Becht.

“Each year we serve 300 or more families with Christmas dinner boxes and 700-800 children with toys,” said Aaron Roberts, Executive Assistant of Maywood Mission in Lancaster.

The free toys are always new and for children of all age ranges.  Roberts estimates that they have arranged to hand out three to four thousand toys to people who have already signed up.  Gifts for younger children range from Playdoh to learning toys and for older children, there are gift cards and headphones, among other items.

“Several local businesses and business owners make regular contributions, and we also have a large number of private individuals who give to support us. I couldn’t list all the names but I wish I could – these people make what we do possible. We have partnered with the Fairfield County Foundation and United Way of Fairfield County for many years and they still play an important part in helping us serve the community,” said Roberts.

The mission has already served many people for this holiday season and will be concentrating their efforts for next year.  However, they will not leave anyone empty handed this year.  For those who need assistance with food or clothes this winter, please contact Maywood Mission Food Pantry, or the Thrift Store at 740-901-3027.
